Cement Thermal Batteries Move Toward Plant Scale
A planned Holcim deployment shows high-temperature thermal storage moving from demonstration toward a cement-plant operating trial.
Canary Media reported on 15 September 2026 that Electrified Thermal Solutions plans to deploy two thermal batteries at a Holcim facility. The units are intended to supply heat to a high-temperature chamber and are scheduled to come online in early 2027. The companies did not identify the plant location or project cost, so this is a planned industrial trial rather than proven fleet-wide performance.
1. Thermal storage targets the fuel side of cement emissions
The system uses electricity to heat insulated metal-oxide firebricks, then transfers stored energy as hot gas to industrial equipment. Canary Media said the platform can store 20 MWh of heat at temperatures up to 1,800°C, while the Holcim application would support calcination heat. This may reduce fossil-fuel demand for process heat, but it does not remove carbon dioxide released by limestone chemistry.

2. Commercial value depends on the local energy system
Temperature capability alone does not establish commercial viability. Electricity prices, off-peak availability, renewable generation, gas prices, grid capacity, duty cycle and maintenance will shape each project. The planned units follow more than 1,000 operating hours reported for the developer's commercial-scale system in San Antonio, but performance at a cement facility still needs real-production proof.
3. Lower-carbon cement still needs a portfolio approach
Electrified heat can address part of a plant's combustion emissions. Clinker substitution and qualified supplementary cementitious materials address another part by reducing clinker demand per tonne of cement. Buyers and producers should assess heat technology, formulation, quality control and dependable GGBFS or GBFS supply as connected workstreams.

Takeaway: The Holcim project is a meaningful scale signal for cement thermal batteries, but its value will depend on commissioning, continuous-operation proof and site-specific energy economics. Source: Canary Media, published 15 September 2026.
